New UMC.org will offer more services, create communities--
The new year will bring a new Web site for The United Methodist Church. United Methodist Communications is relaunching UMC.org with more features and greater ease of use.

Pending Russian law could threaten Christian outreach
A spokesman with the Slavic Gospel Association (SGA) says Christians in Russia face uncertain times because of a new religion law due to take effect this spring that would impose registration and reporting restrictions on churches. The "law on non-governmental organizations" set to take effect in Russia in April reportedly would require non-governmental groups (NGOs), including churches, to register with state agencies. The groups would also be required to list their funding sources and provide records of all meetings.

Agency makes student loans, scholarships available
College students who need additional funds for the current semester can apply for a United Methodist student loan.

Speaker tells abortion-rights opponents not to give up
While ardent opponents of abortion rights filled subways and streets for the March for Life rally on the 34th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, a small group of United Methodists quietly worshiped together, renewing a call to change the church’s position on abortion as a choice under certain circumstances
